COTATI CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY ENDORSES A RESOLUTION OPPOSING RACISM

On Tuesday, March 23, the City Council unanimously approved a resolution opposing racism in response to the recent violence and harassment against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Recent tragedies highlight an escalating pattern of anti-Asian hate crimes that we have seen in our country over the past year. Facing a global pandemic together has shown us how inextricably connected our community is at every level. However, some people have used the pandemic as a vehicle for fomenting racist, sexist, anti-Asian sentiment and as a cover for enacting violence against people based on their racial and ethnic backgrounds. The City Council took action to speak out firmly and unanimously against racism, to raise awareness of the issue, and to stand in solidarity of our fellow AAPI residents.

After the meeting, Mayor Moore commented, “With the recent violence against Asian-Americans, and the racist comments recently directed towards Rohnert Park Vice Mayor Elward, the City Council needed to publicly speak out against racism. The Cotati City Council was clear and unanimous that racism against Asian-Americans, or against any Americans, has no place in society today.”
